With Turkey day just around the corner, I'm sure you've started the important family discussion as to what will be featured on this year's dinner menu. While pie is always a dessert staple, making it is never an easy task, and let's be honest, the eating is always more exciting than the actual baking. So, if you love pie and hate AIDS/cancer, put down your shopping list, pull out your wallets and keep reading.
Mama's Pie in the Sky fundraiser, which is now in its 12th year and kicks off Monday, Oct. 10 until Sunday, Nov. 20, provides meals for clients who are too ill to shop or cook for themselves. Local bakers donate hundreds of homemade, holiday pies in a variety of flavors (pumpkin, pecan, apple and Dutch apple) in hopes of helping to raise $120,000; that translate to more than 44,000 home-delivered meals.
Each delicious and nutritious - OK, so maybe not technically nutritious but extremely tasty - pie sold provides more than seven meals for clients, and their children battling AIDS or cancer. Pies are $25 and can be picked up at an array of locations across San Diego, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to help our local neighbors in need.
For those not currently enjoying the 72 and sunny San Diego weather, I'm so sorry, but dont be alarmed. You can still get involved by purchasing a Love-a-client pie. These pies, which are directly donated to a family in need, will not only make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, theyll enter you into a raffle with the chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card; perfect timing for all you procrastinators who have yet to start your Christmas shopping!
From the bottom of my heart, and the rumble for fresh-baked pie in my stomach, thanks for helping to spread the love this Thanksgiving. Blessings to you and yours as you gather around your dinner table this Nov. 24th!
